July 6- 15 2014
During my second season playing for the WNBA Stars, my best friends (Nikki, Mariam and my sister Kesia) decided that they needed a vacation, so they came to visit me in sunny San Antonio for the week.
As a professional basketball player, I am rarely home. So whenever my friends or family are able to visit it means the world to me as it allows me to spend some rare quality time with them.
Kesia and Nikki landed in San Antonio in the morning while I was at practice. Luckily, my friend, Pauline kindly offered to pick them up and drop them off at my apartment.
Back home in Canada, we don't have a lot of the restaurants that they have here in America. We do, however, get a lot of American tv channels that are always advertising these restaurants. One of those restaurants is Sonic! On the drive from the airport to my apartment complex, Nikki and Kesia asked Pauline if they could stop to get a bite to eat after their travel that morning. July 6th, 2014 marks the day that Nikki and Kesia began their obsession with Sonic!
The first few days of their visit were pretty calm and relaxing. Kesia and Nikki would sleep in then relax at the outdoor pool taking in the sun while I spent my mornings at the gym in practice. At night we would cook and catch up like old times. One night we went shopping at Ross and some other stores we don’t have in Canada. They both loved Ross, which is very similar to Winners but with better quality, selection and prices. On another night I took them to River walk and walked along the path of the water. There was a free show taking place on the river that we happened across, so we sat down and enjoyed the live entertainment before the heat got the best of us. The following day I had a game, so they were able to come out and support the team. This would be Nikki’s first time watching a professional basketball game live, and I was happy to share that experience with her!
Day four consisted of more relaxation for the ladies, and the evening was spent going to our team bible study hosted by Ms. Betsy. The next day, another good friend of mine, Mariam flew in. Her arrival completely changed the dynamics of the trip from calm and relaxation to adventure and sightseeing. Mariam, like me, is the kind of person who wants to explore and see the history and attractions of a new city (see all my other travel blogs). So prior to arriving, she researched all the must-see places in San Antonio and the surrounding area. As a result, day 5 was spent touring the San Antonio Missions National Historical Parks.
The missions contained five stops: the Alamo, San Jose, San Juan, Concepcion, and Espada. Mariam had originally planned for us to bike the entire path, but we quickly determined that none of us wanted to be out in the heat for hours on end like that. Instead, we drove to each mission, allowing the air conditioning to cool us between destinations. The sights were absolutely beautiful, the buildings were historic and in the photos, it almost looked like we were in a completely different country. To finish up the day, we ended our tour with a boat ride along the river walk. In all, it was a very educational, hot, and memorable, sight-seeing day with my closest friends. The following day was a recovery day where the main event was all three of my friends coming to the AT&T center to cheer us on during our game.
For day 7, our big outing was to the Cheesecake Factory. Ever since my Syracuse days, my sister and I have been obsessed with the Cheesecake Factory - best cheesecake selections ever! This was our final meal together because the following afternoon I’d be leaving for a road trip and Mariam would be heading home. While I was away in Phoenix they would go to the Natural Bridge Caverns and go zip lining (so jealous!) They also made another Sonic stop and spent more time relaxing at the pool.
Day 10 was my last full day with Nikki and Kesia before they went back home to reality. We, or rather they, decided that we should go shopping. So we got all dolled up and I took them to La Cantera, a beautiful outdoor mall with a lot of great stores including H&M, Forever 21, Love Culture, Nordstrom, Victoria’s Secret, and more. The two shopped to their hearts content and also tried Chik-Fil-A for the first time (another great American food place we don’t have in Canada). On our final day together I made a pit stop to the Midnight Bakehouse to pick up some chocolate chip cookie dough cupcakes for Kesia and Nikki to try. They ended up loving them as much as I did and took some for their travels back home.
All in all, I had an absolutely wonderful time with my friends! Every chance to spend time with them is a blessing since these past few years I have rarely been home. They had a great time and were able to relax, soak up the hot sun, go swimming, shopping, catch a couple WNBA games, see some of San Antonio’s attractions and create great memories together. A successful girls’ week, I’d say!
As always, thanks for stopping by and God bless.
